Messi: HE deserved the Ballon d’Or
Ex-Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski (33) won’t like to hear that at all…
Reigning Ballon d’Or winner Lionel Messi (35) made a clear decision in favor of a specific successor after the 30 nominees were announced.
“I think this year there is no doubt. It’s clear that Benzema has had a spectacular year,” the PSG superstar said of the Real Madrid forward in an interview with TyC Sports. The Argentine’s explanation: “He crowned this year with the Champions League in which he was decisive in every game from the round of 16 onwards. I don’t think there is any doubt this year.”
For the first time since 2005, Messi himself is not on the shortlist for the world footballer’s choice of the French sports newspaper “L’Équipe”. His long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo (37), on the other hand, is in the top 30, as are the two German internationals Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rüdiger.
PSG newcomer Lewandowski, who was narrowly defeated by Messi last year as the top favorite in the Ballon d’Or election, can also have new hopes for the coveted award. The Pole prevailed in the Fifa election “The Best”.
This time, Real goalscorer Karim Benzema (34) is the top candidate for the title – not just for Messi. Despite Lewandowski’s departure, Bayern also have a hot iron in the fire: Sadio Mané (30), who was brought from Liverpool in the summer.
With Kylian Mbappé (23), another candidate says when asked who he sees in the end: “I would say: Benzema, me and Mané.”
